Every LabCollector release is guided by a simple principle: remove friction from everyday laboratory operations. Version 6.35 applies it to the things labs touch constantly — working with data where it lives, using cold storage wisely, running the animal facility with fewer clicks, and keeping purchasing and administration predictable.
From editing a spreadsheet without ever leaving a record to measuring the environmental impact of freezer storage, v6.35 delivers practical improvements that save time, improve data quality and support greener research practices. Here's what's new.
Eco Impact: make every freezer count
Cold storage is one of the most resource-intensive parts of a lab, and often the least examined. The new Eco Impact page in the Tools menu turns it into a sustainability score you can act on, every day.
Eco Score: measure your storage efficiency
LabCollector generates an Eco Score from 0 to 100 and shows it as a leaf, so storage efficiency becomes an immediate, comparable snapshot rather than an annual report.
Actionable recommendations, AI suggestions and transparency
- An Eco Score from 0 to 100, displayed as a leaf, built from equipment utilisation, box organisation, sample management practices and storage optimisation opportunities — with a ranked list of the actions that will move it most.
- Actionable recommendations from a nightly snapshot: boxes to merge, saturated boxes, uneven use within a temperature class and repeated thaw cycles. Any section can be reordered or hidden.
- AI suggestions when an AI provider is configured — and the estimated CO₂ footprint of your AI integrations shown per provider and counted in the score, for transparent, responsible AI use.
- Tree compensation: admins record trees planted with Tree-Nation, Greenspark, My Tree or EcoTree — each tree adds one point for three months.
- A temperature and power section that summarises the Data Logger add-on, plus an Eco Score badge in the Storage Browser header and a direct link to My Green Lab.
“Sustainability isn't a report you write once a year. It's a score you can see and improve every day.”
AI suggestions require an AI provider to be configured, and the monitoring section is richer when the Data Logger add-on is installed. Learn more about My Green Lab and Data Logger.
Work with your data, right where it lives
Scientific data should be easy to access, edit and connect. The small daily detour — export, edit elsewhere, re-upload — is exactly where time and traceability are lost, so v6.35 closes several of those loops.
Edit spreadsheets directly inside records
CSV, TSV and Excel files attached to records now open in a built-in spreadsheet editor. No downloads, no external editing, no re-uploading new versions:
- Edit cells instantly, add or remove rows and columns, and paste straight from Excel.
- Preserve workbook formulas, styles and charts — and keep a version and history on every save.
- Optionally print spreadsheet content as tables in record prints.
New linear sequence map
Alongside the traditional plasmid map, annotations can now be visualised in a linear format — a much clearer representation for long sequences and annotated constructs:
- Annotation tracks in a linear view, with zoom and interactive tooltips.
- Consistent annotation colouring across the sequence and the plasmid map.
- PNG and PDF export for reports, figures and publications.
Linked records, one tab away
While viewing reagents, supplies, chemicals, antibodies or custom module records, the linked record opens in a dedicated tab instead of sending you elsewhere — including a molecule viewer for chemical structures. Faster navigation, better context, no lost work.
And across the rest of your records
- Smart match import: map CSV columns to fields with similarity suggestions, previews and reusable templates.
- Memorize records directly from Storage Browser boxes — including bags, shelves and boxes without a grid.
- Chemical Structures: Autofill PubChem now also imports CAS number, synonyms, physical properties and safety data in one click.
- Destock a lot straight from a linked custom field, and show total stock per unit on the summary line of storage modules.
- More reporting visibility: record status export options, richer inventory summaries and a Query Builder results widget on the dashboard.
Better animal facility management
The Cage Facility Plan has been rebuilt around the questions facility staff ask all day: which cages are occupied, which are free, and what is in this one.
- A redesigned Cage Facility Plan — occupied and available cages at a glance across rooms, racks and cages, with room search, full-screen mode and a collapsible “Cages With No Location” bar.
- The animal list of a cage opens in a side panel, so you keep the plan in view while you check what is in a cage.
- Safer moves: positions holding several cages show a warning, and moving one of them asks for confirmation.
- Each animal is counted once — Total Animals shows a dash when there is no quantity to add up.
- Filiations preselect the parents when created from an animal record, simplifying colony and lineage management, and recipe support streamlines the standard processes used in the facility.
An optional cage display on the Animals summary line keeps the same information visible while you work through a record.
Purchasing and inventory, with fewer surprises
Managing suppliers and purchasing workflows gets clearer end to end:
- Currency management, so every price is displayed in the right currency for internationally operating labs.
- POMv2 is now in Smart Search and connects to AccountsIQ, with additional workflow steps, PO templates showing who ordered and who requested each line, primer name and sequence tags, and partial deliveries that can reuse invoices across staged fulfilment.
- Stock control: N copies of a lot label at delivery, a unique-values option on lot custom fields, duplicate SMILES blocked in Chemical Structures, and an option to hide the forecast in Reagents & Supplies.
Labels, printing and identification
Accurate labelling remains central to sample traceability:
- DYMO printing reworked — genuine roll references with US and EU names, correct sizes on the LabelWriter 550, and a rotate control for portrait rolls.
- Label printing on Safari (macOS) no longer cuts labels.
- A new API action, getLabel, returns label PDFs — useful for automated and high-volume identification workflows.
Stronger administration and monitoring
Administrators get better tools for day-to-day management and troubleshooting:
- A redesigned Alerts panel separates active and unread alerts, supports individual or bulk read, and keeps alerts read after a refresh.
- SMS: Zavu is available alongside Twilio and Plivo, and Twilio now accepts API keys.
- AI: the GPT-6 family (Astra, Sol and Luna) works in Co-Scientist and Smart Search, and the AI integrations page is reorganised.
Also for admins:
- Editable email invites and Transfer Data from Lab Members.
- Replace the Main Super Administrator in one click, and an SSO/LDAP debug mode for faster troubleshooting.
- Better settings search, and a sidebar menu by default on new installs.
The dashboard Query Builder results widget requires Query Builder 3.23 or later.
Security and reliability
Sessions are hardened: rights never carry over between two users of the same browser, and sessions are no longer shared with other web applications running on the same server. Document titles are displayed safely, NetPlasmid uses safer queries and respects edit rights, and the release closes the usual round of fixes across storage, imports, currencies, encoding and alerts.
Built for everyday laboratory work
v6.35 isn't built around a single headline feature. It improves the areas laboratories use every day:
Whether your priority is data integrity, operational efficiency, sustainability, inventory management or facility oversight, this release helps your team get more done with fewer clicks.
Upgrading is automatic and includes a cleanup of animals listed several times in older cages. Then open Tools > Eco Impact to see where your storage stands.
Why this release matters
v6.35 makes two things visible that labs usually only discover in an audit or an energy report: how their cold storage is really used, and how their facility is really organised. Everything else follows the same principle — keep people on the screen they are already on, and let the data come to them.
Trusted by more than 9,000 laboratories across 60+ countries, LabCollector keeps evolving with the needs of research, clinical, pharmaceutical, food and beverage, biobank and environmental labs worldwide.
