How to Bring Wireless Data Capture to Legacy Laboratory Instruments

Turn RS232 instruments into modern, wireless devices with the AgileBio BLE Dongle and BLE Listener for Windows and macOS.

Laboratories rely on accurate measurements to ensure data integrity, regulatory compliance, and operational efficiency. Yet many balances, scales, and analytical instruments still depend on RS232 serial connections, requiring manual transcription or cumbersome cabling to transfer results into digital systems.

Replacing these instruments is often expensive and unnecessary. Instead, laboratories can modernize their workflows by adding wireless connectivity while preserving their existing equipment.

The Challenge of Legacy RS232 Laboratory Instruments

Thousands of laboratories continue to use reliable instruments equipped with RS232 ports. While these devices still perform perfectly for weighing, measurement, and data collection tasks, they often present several challenges:

  • Manual transcription of measurement results
  • Risk of human error during data entry
  • Limited workstation flexibility due to cables
  • Difficulty integrating results with digital laboratory systems
  • Reduced traceability and audit readiness

These challenges become even more significant in regulated environments where data accuracy and traceability are critical.

A Simple Way to Modernize Existing Equipment

The AgileBio BLE Dongle and BLE Listener offer a practical solution for transforming RS232 instruments into wireless devices.

Instead of replacing balances, scales, and other laboratory equipment, laboratories can add Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) connectivity and immediately start transmitting measurements wirelessly to a computer running Windows or macOS.

The result is a modern data acquisition workflow without the cost and disruption of purchasing new instruments.

How BLE Listener Works

The system combines two components:

AgileBio BLE Dongle

The BLE Dongle connects directly to the RS232 port of a compatible laboratory instrument and transmits measurement data wirelessly.

BLE Listener Software

Available for both Windows and macOS, BLE Listener receives measurement data from the dongle and injects it into any open application by emulating keyboard input — so each value is "typed" straight into whichever field currently has focus.

The key to this simplicity is keyboard emulation. BLE Listener does not require an API, a plugin, or a dedicated integration with each application: it presents itself to the operating system as a keyboard and "types" every measurement the instant it arrives from the instrument. Because the value is delivered exactly like manual typing, it lands in whatever field has focus — regardless of which software is open.

In practice, the operator simply places the cursor in the target field and takes the reading on the instrument. The value appears instantly, exactly where it is needed. Results can be entered directly into:

Electronic Lab Notebooks (ELNs)

Microsoft Excel

Scientific software applications

Custom desktop applications

Web-based laboratory systems

Because the transfer relies on keystroke emulation rather than a bespoke connector, it works with virtually any application that accepts typed input — with minimal configuration and no development effort. The optional after-value action (new line, tab, or none) controls what happens once a value is inserted, so a run of consecutive measurements can be captured without ever touching the keyboard.

The BLE Listener interface keeps the workflow simple. Once the dongle is plugged into the instrument, the software scans for nearby Bluetooth devices, lets you select the right instrument protocol, and then displays each captured measurement in real time.

Built-in protocol support covers common laboratory instrument families — including Mettler Toledo (MT-SICS), Sartorius (SBI), KERN (KCP), OHAUS and A&D — so most RS232 balances and scales work without custom configuration. A toggle enables keystroke simulation so values land directly in the active field, and the Log keeps a timestamped history of every reading for traceability.

Direct Integration with LabCollector

For laboratories using LabCollector, keyboard emulation turns any field prompt into a direct data-capture point. There is nothing to configure inside LabCollector itself: the operator opens a record page — a form, an experiment, a sample entry, or any other field prompt — clicks into the value field, and takes the measurement on the instrument. The reading is typed straight into that field, exactly as if it had been entered by hand, but without the risk of a transcription mistake.

Benefits include:

Faster data entry

Reduced transcription errors

Improved data integrity

Better traceability

Increased laboratory productivity

Users can simply position the cursor in a LabCollector field and automatically populate measurement values coming directly from the instrument.

Improve Data Integrity and Compliance

Manual result transcription remains one of the most common sources of laboratory errors. Even simple weighing operations can introduce mistakes when operators must read a value, remember it, and enter it into another system. By automatically capturing measurements directly from the instrument, laboratories can:

Minimize transcription mistakes

Improve record accuracy

Strengthen audit trails

Support data integrity initiatives

Enhance compliance with quality procedures

Reduce Cable Clutter in the Laboratory

Traditional serial communication often requires long cables running between instruments and workstations. BLE technology eliminates much of this complexity, allowing laboratories to:

Improve workspace organization

Increase workstation flexibility

Reduce cable management issues

Simplify instrument deployment

The result is a cleaner and more efficient laboratory environment.

No Need to Replace Your Instruments

One of the biggest advantages of the AgileBio BLE solution is its ability to extend the useful life of existing equipment. Instead of investing in new balances or measurement devices simply to obtain modern connectivity features, laboratories can continue using proven instruments while benefiting from wireless data acquisition. This reduces both capital expenditure and implementation time.

Transform Your Laboratory Workflow

Wireless data capture is no longer reserved for new laboratory equipment. With the AgileBio BLE Dongle and BLE Listener, laboratories can quickly modernize legacy RS232 instruments and automatically transfer measurements into LabCollector, ELNs, spreadsheets, and other applications. By eliminating manual transcription, reducing errors, and improving traceability, laboratories gain a more efficient and reliable data capture process while preserving their existing equipment investments.
